Why "battery supplier" means different things in Southeast Asia

Mordor Intelligence estimates the Southeast Asia battery market at about USD 3.04 billion in 2025, growing at roughly 6.8% a year to about USD 4.22 billion by 2030. Automotive applications accounted for around 59% of the market in 2024, and energy storage is the fastest-growing segment. Household primary batteries sit in a minor "other" category in reports like this, which is why headline market data says little about the AA and AAA cells found in remotes, toys and torches.

Regional roles also differ by country. Speeda's ASEAN battery industry overview reports that Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia lead regional battery production. It also reports that Vietnam and Indonesia use their nickel reserves to attract foreign investment, and that Thailand is the largest battery market in ASEAN-6 and a net exporter of lead-acid batteries. In practice, primary battery output is concentrated in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, while EV cell investment is concentrated in Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Primary battery manufacturers (alkaline and zinc-carbon)

This is the group most relevant to distributors, retailers and private-label brands. All the companies below have production in Southeast Asia confirmed by an official or third-party source.

Panasonic Energy. Panasonic's own page lists an alkaline factory in Thailand and a zinc-carbon factory in Indonesia. Bangkok Post reported in March 2026 that its Thai operation has produced more than 20 billion dry batteries cumulatively, exports to over 40 countries and holds the largest share of Thailand's dry battery segment.

GP Batteries. GP says it operates 15 factories across China, Malaysia and Vietnam, with global output of about 5 billion batteries a year, according to its Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks profile. Its Malaysian and Vietnamese plants have received UL Zero Waste to Landfill validation, so its sustainability claims come with third-party validation.

HW Energy. We describe our own plant in a separate section below, so you can compare our claims against the same criteria as everyone else's.

Lithium-ion, EV and lead-acid suppliers

Large-format cell suppliers sell mainly to automakers, energy-storage integrators and industrial buyers. Qualification cycles are long, and contracts are usually negotiated directly. The details below come from press coverage of announcements, so check current output with the company.

Sustainability is the other area we document publicly. Our ESG page says the plant runs on the DEEP C park's hybrid electricity network, which combines conventional power with solar, waste-to-energy and wind. It also reports FSC-certified packaging materials and compliance with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. Ask for the current certificates when you evaluate us, just as you should with anyone else.

You can browse the full range on our product page. The alkaline batteries include AAA LR03, AA LR6, C LR14, D LR20 and 9V 6LR61. The heavy-duty batteries include AAA R03P, AA R6P, C R14P, D R20P and 9V 6F22.

How to compare battery suppliers technically

Brochures rarely separate a manufacturer from a trader. Documentation does. Use the table below to structure your supplier audit. Our private label buyer's guide covers the same ground in more detail.

Table 4: Supplier verification checklist for primary batteries

What to verifyWhy it mattersEvidence to request
In-house cell productionTraders can blend cells from several sources, which causes batch-to-batch variation.Factory audit report, line video, cell datasheets
Chemistry matched to the deviceZinc-carbon suits very low drain. Alkaline suits medium to high drain and long storage. See our alkaline vs. carbon zinc guide.Discharge curves at your device's actual current draw
IEC 60086 conformitySets designations (LR6, R6P), dimensions and discharge tests. The 2026 edition changed several tests.Test reports that state the standard edition used
Leakage resistance and shelf lifeLeakage is the most common field complaint. See battery leak prevention technology.Accelerated storage test data and the test method
CertificationsIndependent proof of quality and environmental management.Current, unexpired certificate copies with issuing body
Raw-material originZinc and manganese dioxide quality drive leakage and capacity.Country of origin and supplier certificates for key inputs
Lead time and packagingPeak-season stockouts and retail labeling failures are avoidable.Written first-order and repeat-order lead times, MOQ per pack format

Two 2026 developments that affect sourcing decisions

1. IEC 60086:2026 revises the primary battery standard

IEC 60086-1:2026 is the 14th edition and replaces the 2021 edition. IEC 60086-2-1:2026 revises the specifications for aqueous-electrolyte batteries, which include alkaline and zinc-carbon cells. Our IEC 60086:2026 summary lists the officially published changes. The ones most relevant to buyers are in Table 5.

Table 5: Selected IEC 60086 changes and what to ask your supplier

Change in the 2026 editionPractical question for suppliers
The digital audio test load for LR03, TR03 and R03 rose from 50 mA to 75 mA.Do your AAA datasheet figures use the new load, or the old one?
For LR6, a personal grooming test replaced the high-drain application test.Which LR6 application tests does your published runtime data follow?
A new Annex I identifies general-use batteries and their comparison tests, in support of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.Can you supply test documentation suited to EU Batteries Regulation requirements?

2. The EU anti-dumping investigation on Chinese alkaline batteries

On 2 July 2026, the European Commission opened an anti-dumping investigation into cylindrical alkaline manganese dioxide batteries originating in China (CN code 8506 10 11), following a complaint from VARTA Consumer Batteries. The case is listed as AD756. As of our summary of the case, no anti-dumping duty has been imposed. The Commission has said it intends to register imports at an early stage, which could allow duties to be collected retroactively if they are later imposed.

For EU-bound brands, this makes the origin of production a commercial risk factor worth reviewing. Sourcing from a plant in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia or Indonesia is one way to diversify. But customs origin is decided under trade rules, not by the port of shipment, so confirm origin treatment with a customs adviser before you rely on it. This is general information, not legal advice.

Which type of supplier fits your need?

  • Private-label household batteries (retail, toys, remotes): look at integrated primary battery manufacturers that offer OEM packaging and custom jackets. See our technical buyer's guide for OEM and private-label brands.
  • Device makers that want a globally recognized brand on the battery: established consumer brands with regional factories, such as Panasonic or GP, may fit better than an unbranded OEM line.
  • EV, e-mobility and energy storage: approach the lithium-ion cell makers in Table 2 directly. Expect long qualification cycles and volume thresholds.
  • Backup power and automotive starter batteries: regional lead-acid manufacturers are usually the practical choice.

Frequently asked questions

Which Southeast Asian countries manufacture batteries?

Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia host the most confirmed production, across primary, lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries. The company examples in Tables 1 and 2 give a starting point.

Do I need alkaline or heavy-duty batteries?

It depends on the device's current draw and how often batteries are replaced. Very low-drain devices can use zinc-carbon, while higher-drain or hard-to-reach devices generally suit alkaline. The AA LR6 technical guide covers real-world runtime and storage in more detail.

Does HW Energy offer OEM and private-label production?

Yes. HW Energy's support page describes a one-stop service from packaging design to delivery. The FAQ lists the packaging formats and lead times.

How can I check a supplier's claims?

Request certificate copies, test reports that name the standard edition, written lead times and, where possible, a factory audit or video walkthrough. Compare what you receive against Table 4.
